Multiplication and Division

Multiplication Means:

Multiplication is simple. It means to have groups of something, groups of something else, and putting them together to see how much you have total.

For example, if the problem was 6×4, you put the 4 groups of 6 (or 6 groups of 4) together to get 24! Simple, right?

There is also vocabulary for multiplication as there is for addition.

Long Multiplication Steps:

What if it is too hard? No prob! Let’s say this is your problem: 56×7=?        First, you multiply the ones. 7×6=42. Put the 2 in the ones place, and put the 4 over the 5. Then you multiply the ones and tens. 5×7=35. But then you add 4 to equal 39, and put it next to the 2. If you did it right, then it should equal 392.

Division Means:

Division is the opposite of Multiplication. You get a pile of any size, then you try to get the same number in each group. But sometimes there can be remainders (skip 2 paragraphs downward).

For example, if you try to get 7 groups of the same number out of 56, you separate 56 into parts. Lets just say you think the answer is 9, you need to multiply to check. If it equals the dividend, (56) then you are right. Uh oh! 9×7=63! Now you need to make corrections. The answer is 8.

But say you want to separate 58 into 7 groups. You do the math, but you have 2 remains. all you need to do is put your 8 down, then simply put a capital R then put the 2.

Long Division Steps:

We have another “What if it’s hard”! Lets say your problem is 2 divided by 46. Well, first cover up the 6 to make it look like it is 4 divided by 2. The answer is 2. Now you need to put that 2 on top of the 4 and multiply 2 and 2, which equals 4. Now you put the 4 below the other 4, and subtract them – easy! Zero. Then you need to compare 0 and 2. If 0 is greater than 2, you need to erase the subtraction problem, and start over. But in this case, 0 is a smaller number than 2. Now you need to stop covering the 6 and bring it down next to the 0. Next, you need to see how many 2s you can get out of 6. Which is 3. Now put it above the six. Don’t stop now– we are almost done! Next you need to multiply again, but ignore the two because you’ve already used it. 3×2=6, so put the 6 under the other. Now subtract the two, and if it equals zero, you’re just barely there! You have to multiply to check. 23×2=46, so now you’re done.
